Case for Support

Investing in Tomorrow:  The Max Rhymes Foundation

“The true promise of a society’s future is not found in the success of a few, but in the opportunity we offer to all children to ignite their imaginations and know the joy of literacy.”

Todd Courtney, Co-founder and President, Max Rhymes Foundation

Literacy and Life

Children who lack learning resources and support in their early years struggle to achieve their potential.  Literacy opens doors to an amazing world while unlocking the social-emotional capacity of children to learn, grow and use their learning to navigate the entire journey of their lives.

The Max Rhymes Foundation transforms the lives of children in under-resourced schools by fostering literacy and essential social-emotional learning (SEL) skills through its innovative classroom adoption program.

The Challenge: Literacy and A Crisis in the Learning Environment

Two-thirds of U.S. students are not reading at grade level. This crisis is exacerbated by a significant 3-million-word gap by the time they reach kindergarten between those in under-resourced schools and children who have more resources.  In addition, children who have not experienced broadly taught social skills and SEL in their home or caregiving may be difficult to teach or manage in the classroom.  This is a contributing factor to over 60% of U.S. teachers leaving the profession within their first five years. This multi-generational crisis impacts economic growth, community safety, and civic engagement, perpetuating a cycle of poverty that disproportionately affects low-income families. Although some districts in various cities purchase SEL programs, they inevitably get cut due to lack of funding.

The Max Rhymes Approach

We “adopt” under-resourced schools.  Max Rhymes Foundation (MRF) gives each K-3rd grade child in these schools a 5-book set of engaging, values-based books written in memorable rhymes in both English and Dual Language (DL) Spanish.  Historically, we know that children have always remembered rhymes, from their earliest nursery rhymes to simple songs.  For teachers, and for the children to enjoy in the classroom and keep at home, we provide activity courses, teaching modules and learning videos. Our outreach also includes additional interdisciplinary resources for educators, students and families; a crucial element necessary to invoke social-emotional growth. This comprehensive approach engages children who struggle with reading by integrating positive affirmations and memorable rhymes. Max Rhymes not only builds strong literacy skills: MRF also cultivates resiliency, empowering children to thrive academically and personally. The discipline of mastering a rhyme has a long-lasting impact on children.

The Max Rhymes Foundation: Nurturing Minds and Hearts

There are three core pillars to The Max Rhymes Foundation approach:

  • The Message. Max Rhymes focuses on crucial positive core values such as kindness, patience, and respect, confirming or helping to change what has been learned in the home environment. This holistic approach helps ensure that children develop not only reading skills but also the emotional intelligence necessary for personal development and positive peer interaction. In return, the child’s natural curiosity is ignited and critical thinking evolves.
  • Affirmations. The next step is writing the messages as affirmations. Many of the rhymes start with “I am”: “I am the one who is responsible for me. When I look in the mirror it’s easy to see.” By internalizing these affirmations, children are equipped with a strong foundation for future success.

  • Embedding Affirmations in Rhymes:  Rhyming leverages the simplicity of memorization, strengthens foundational reading skills (rhyme recognition, rhyme production, onset fluency, blending phonemes), and provides a foundation for critical thinking.  By empowering the child with core societal values necessary for growth, our program’s impact extends beyond individual children to encompass family engagement. By giving all children in adopted schools (starting with K-3) the same resources, we create a saturated learning environment that encourages families to participate in the literacy and SEL journey together. This collective approach reinforces learning and helps build stronger, more connected communities.

Proven Impact and Sustainable Change

The MRF model creates a pyramid of strength for change. If all K-3 learners in elementary schools in the same demographic zip codes are offered the MRF model, in three years every student will have been part of the Max Rhymes program. We believe “Once adopted, always adopted.” Their aptitude for reading and their social emotional education will carry them through middle and high school with a potentially profound impact on their lives and their communities.  Even in a highly mobile society, the learning will travel with the children to their new homes and schools.

The results are being felt.  What started as a single pilot school in Oakland, CA has now expanded into over 200,000 books in 351 classrooms, in 51 cities in 20 states.
